Our Story
Founded in 2000 as a Millennium project, Fareham Good Neighbours is a voluntary organisation working under the umbrella of the Good Neighbours Network, Hampshire and adopted by Christians Together in Fareham (CTiF) who still fund and support us. In the early years, most of our Befrienders came from churches in and around Fareham. Over time this expanded to involve others in the community.
Our Befrienders visit adults who live alone and don’t have family or friends nearby who can visit. They pop in regularly for a friendly chat, a listening ear, and some steady, reassuring company, sharing stories over a cup of tea
We cover the whole of Fareham Borough — apart from Stubbington Village and Hill Head, which have their own group. The map below shows just how far we reach. Over our lifetime, befrienders have delivered more than 60,000 hours of their time — that’s 2,500 days, or seven years of contact and friendship to lonely people.
Fareham Good Neighbours does not provide personal care, shopping, gardening, cleaning, or transport.
What they do offer is just as important: kindness, time, and a genuine human connection. Each Befriender is matched with one person, and — unless things change — they stay with that person so a real, trusting relationship can grow. Our Befrienders find it a very rewarding experience.
